The Orchard has acquired North American rights to Sam Elliott starrer The Hero and is planning a wide release for the film in the fall. Directed by Brett Haley, whose last film I’ll See You in My Dreams played Sundance in 2015, The Hero follows a washed-up stoner actor (Elliott) who works to get his life in order after a cancer diagnosis. It was written by Haley and Mark Basch. Laura Prepon, Nick Offerman, Krysten Ritter and Katharine Ross also star in the feature, which premiered Saturday in the U.S. Dramatic section at the Sundance Film Festival. Houston King, Sam Bisbee and Erik Rommesmo produced the pic, with Jeff Schlossman, Franklin Carson, Bill Wallwork, Danny Rifkin, David Bunce, Frank Brenner, Jackie Kelman Bisbee, Lance Acord and Theodora Dunlap acting as executive producers. The production companies involved included Northern Light Films, Park Pictures and Houston King Productions. It’s the second acquisition of the festival for The Orchard, which on Friday announced a deal for all North American rights to hunting documentary Trophy, with CNN handling broadcast rights to the film.
